Land Rover Series Axles

Winchester Gears Modified Series Axles.

Like the Defender The series 2 and 3 vehicles, although similar throughout design sharing many components that can be swapped from one vehicle to the next all have slightly different set ups. While many series 2 and 3 parts are interchangeable the series 3 axles were designed for greater load capacity and standardization.

Series 2/2a generally use Rover type axles. While some late 2a adopted it, the Salisbury rear axle became standard on all Series 3 109 models for greater durability. Series 3 front axles often featured an improved and stronger differential housing. Post 1980 Series 3 front axles transitioned to a 24 spline outer shaft and drive flange, notably reducing transmission slack from the previous 10 spline shafts. The braking system was also improved by fitting 11 inch drums improving the performance from earlier models.

Although effective we have improved further with the utilization of modified parts from companies such as ‘Design and Development and LOF Clutches. Both companies have their own Disc brake conversion. They both have their individual advantages and disadvantages. Both are very well put together.

The LOF Kit is a comprehensive kit that allows the fitment of Vented front discs and geometry allows for retaining original series Wheels. The Kit requires a change of the standard hub and 5 bolt drive flange to a Defender hub and 6 bolt drive flange. Only a problem if retaining the original look of the vehicle or fitting the original free wheeling hub set up. Although this is remedied by the way of fitting the AVM Free wheeling hubs specifically designed for the Defender.

The Design and Development kit is a well proven design that does require access to a lathe and milling machine in order to modify the original series hubs to accept a Disc. Alternatively these hubs can be added as part of the kit at additional cost. Solid Discs must be used with this design and original series wheels are not compatible, although the company has produced a compatible wheel in the style of the original series. MOD Wolf wheels are the choice of many when fitting this Kit. There is also a CV upgrade kit offered from D&D that is specifically designed to work with this. A must for anyone running permanent 4 wheel drive. The beautiful black coated drive flanges are a nice touch too.

Running the CV Kit from Design and Development also comes with the added advantage of using 24 spline shafts diff side. Reducing the transmission slack ten fold and opening up the options of running diff centres such as heavy duty 4 pin centres,Air Lockers, Ashcroft and Eaton ATB’s. 24 spline shafts are also available for the rear rover type axles allowing the same options of Differential centres.

Winchester Gears offers rebuild series axles only as a Disc brake option. We will not build drum brake axles.

Here's how we offer our axles. A stripped casing is shot, blasted and degreased. At this point we assess the case and carry out any fabrication repairs as required, such as diff pans and suspension mounts. The Axles are then powdercoated. First with a base coat and a secondary coat to follow. A rebuilt differential is fitted and new swivel balls installed alongside new seals. The swivel knuckles go through the same powder coating procedure and are shimmed and refitted. Universal joints are replaced and stub axles are assembled with new hubs and wheel bearings. The disc conversion kit is fitted and drive members. This is the base line for our rebuilt axles.

Please use the configurator to spec and price your series Axles. Note that you cannot purchase these axles through the website these axles need to be booked into our workshop via telephone or Email. A core pair of axles is required for the build.
