Configure your differential your way, following the options below:
Diff Type
Defender diffs fall into two types: Long Nose and Short Nose.
All front differentials are Long Nose.
Defender 90 rear differentials are also Long Nose.
Defender 110 and 130 rear differentials (2003-on) are Short Nose.
Pre-2003 110 and 130 models use Salisbury rear axles (see Rear Axles section).
Ratio
Choosing the correct diff ratio is essential. All Defenders are fitted with a 3.54:1 ratio as standard. No higher ratios are available, but lower ratios can be fitted. Recommended if running larger tyres. Use the ratio calculator to compare how different ratios affect vehicle speed and engine RPM.
Centre
Choosing the right differential centre is crucial and depends on how you use your Land Rover.
Long Nose diffs come with a 2-pin centre as standard.
Short Nose diffs feature a 4-pin centre.
If your Land Rover is used for more than everyday driving such as towing, off-roading, or overlanding upgrading the diff centre is highly recommended.
Options include:
ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing) Limited Slip and 4-Pin Heavy Duty centres – both improve strength and durability.
The ATB is our preferred choice, as it not only increases strength but also significantly reduces transmission slack while improving handling and traction.
Air Locking Diffs are ideal for serious off-road applications.
Casing
Pegging your differential is strongly recommended for any high-powered Land Rover. If your vehicle has a tuned or upgraded engine—such as a tuned TD5, BMW M57, or V8 pegging becomes almost essential.
Pegging involves modifying the differential casing to fit a phosphor bronze pad behind the crownwheel, at the point where it meets the pinion. This pad prevents the crownwheel from flexing and failing under heavy load. The pad is securely held in place by two studs set into the diff casing.
Flange
If you have a Defender, a 4 bolt flange is required. Some Discovery models use a 3 bolt flange instead. Check underneath your Discovery to see whether your propshaft connects to the differential with 3 or 4 bolts.
Bolt Kit
The Bolt Kit includes new studs and nuts to secure your diff in place and new propshaft bolts.
