ATTENTION – Important considerations before proceeding with this conversion
Before undertaking this conversion, there are several important differences between Series and Defender drivetrains that must be considered. Series vehicles were originally designed with a different transmission layout to Defenders. The Defender uses a permanent four-wheel-drive system, whereas Series vehicles are predominantly two-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive selectable when required.
While it is possible to run a Series vehicle permanently in four-wheel drive, this is not recommended unless a CV joint front axle conversion has been carried out. CV conversion kits are available from Design and Development, or alternatively you can view our complete series axle assemblies here.
As an alternative solution, we also offer a 2WD-selectable LT230, listed below.
Introducing Project “Little Ben”
This development focuses on refining the transmission for Series 2 and 3 Land Rovers.
This conversion replaces the original LT76 gearbox with an R380 gearbox paired to an LT230 transfer box.
The purpose of this kit is to allow a 5-speed R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box to be fitted into a Series II or Series III without the need to move the engine forward.
The kit is a comprehensive bolt-in solution. The key component is the top remote and linkage system, which makes the conversion possible. In addition, we have designed and sourced complementary components for the conversion, including mounts, propshafts, and the transmission tunnel.
These additional items are listed separately, as some customers may prefer to source certain components themselves (such as an R380 turret), or fabricate their own mounts and propshafts.
An R380 stumpy Gearbox and LT230 Transfer Box is required. If you do not already have these items, find the Stumpy R380 Gearbox under TDI Gearboxes here.
If running a standard 4wd drive LT230 transferbox, build your Transferbox here (select 200tdi as this is the variant required)
If a 2wd selectable transfer box is required see the listing below.
Additionally, vehicles running the 2.25 petrol engine will require a different starter motor. The R380 bellhousing does not have a cut-out to accommodate the nose of the original starter motor. We recommend fitting a Powerlite high-torque starter motor.
Finally, Series II chassis will require a minor modification to the front crossmember to provide clearance for the clutch slave cylinder.
