In early production LT230 transfer boxes, the gearbox-to-transfer-box interface was secured using two M10 studs fitted into the transfer case. This was an effective design choice, as these mounting holes are not captive.
In later variants, the design was revised to use through-bolts that pass from the gearbox directly into the transfer box casing. While functional, this design introduces two potential issues:
1. If bolts of incorrect length are installed (too long), they can foul the internal gears, leading to internal damage.
2. The threads in the casing are more vulnerable to wear or cross-threading, which can result in oil leaks.
For this reason, all LT230 transfer boxes supplied by Winchester Gears are built with the Option 2 configuration (studs) as standard. However, both configurations are compatible and can be used depending on application or customer preference.
